Wild Bird Nesting Box for Tits / Sparrows / Robins
We purchased the plans to construct these bird boxes from the RSPB, who are promoting the installation of these in our gardens to support wild birds, with more of our farmland being used for building houses.
Made in the form of a country Swiss cottage design, we supply this in its basic form (unpainted, varnished or waxed) so that you (our customer) can customise it to fit into your garden. Advice - use only NON-SOLVENT based varnish so that birds are not affected when feeding their young, water based is advised.
Note that there is no “perch” near the entry hole / point, this is because the RSPB carried out research which clearly identified that large birds such as crows and magpies used the perch to steal newly laid eggs and/or newly hatched young.
Using this design, it cannot happen with our nesting box!
The nesting box is tall so that those same predators cannot reach the eggs/young at the bottom of the box (should they try).
Included in the rear of the nest box a hinged door, which at the end of the nesting season can be opened and any shell or debris remaining can be easily removed. We have drilled an appropriate hole to the rear of the box so that it can be attached to your shed or wall using a nail or screw.
